What works even better is when act out after you read certain book, or you even accompany your story with some accessories. They could be magnetic faces, or animal figures, etc.

Fine Motor Skills

Manipulative toys, like shape sorters and art supplies, help develop dexterity and hand-eye coordination. There are so many toys that can help you to reach this goal. My favourites are the ones that let your children’s little fingers work a lot. They test patience too.

Social and Emotional Skills

Many toys, especially those designed for role-playing, foster empathy, teamwork, and emotional expression.

STEM Skills

Science kits, coding robots, and math games introduce kids to science, technology, engineering, and math concepts in ways that feel like play rather than school.

What Types of Educational Toys Should You Consider?

When picking out educational toys, look for options that match your child’s age, interests, and developmental stage. Although it is sometimes hard, we strongly recommend sticking with what your child likes doing at the time in 90% of all cases. The rest 10% can and should be introduced from your side.

Another important matter is not to overdo it. A child needs to be challenged and motivated, so toys should not be overly easy or boring for them, but also they can’t be too difficult.

Here are some great types to consider, which we broke down by age range.

For Infants (0-12 Months)

Sensory Toys

Toys with different textures, colors, and sounds (like soft rattles) stimulate sensory development. My first recommendation is to get a musical instruments set. Music and singing is extremely important in early stage of life. Then a playmat with lots of different accessories, textures, and sounds are fantastic place to let your baby play every day. I’d refrain from non-natural electronic toys, such as mobiles, especially for babies.

Soft Blocks or Rings

Perfect for stacking, these toys help babies explore shapes and hand-eye coordination.

High-Contrast Books

Books with bold, simple images improve vision and encourage early language exposure.

For Toddlers (1-3 Years)

Stacking and Nesting Toys

These improve fine motor skills and introduce concepts like size, shape, and spatial awareness. Honestly, stacking cups are the best. This is because a child can stack them, but also put them in one another. There are also numbers on them. So, your child will learn recognizing different sizes of the shapes and numbers. Finally, you can take them to play anywhere, such as home, sandpit or bathtub.

Shape Sorters and Matching Games

Basic puzzle toys help with problem-solving and recognition skills.

Musical Instruments

Drums, xylophones, or maracas encourage rhythm and coordination, plus they’re a lot of fun for little ones.

For Preschoolers (3-5 Years)

Building Blocks and Construction Sets

These allow preschoolers to create, explore, and develop planning skills.

Art Supplies

Crayons, markers, and child-safe scissors encourage creativity and improve fine motor skills.

Interactive Learning Tablets

Although I am not a fan and keep a free-screen policy at home, I recognize the need of educational tablets that offer simple games, teach letters, numbers, and early reading skills.

Oh, our house is full of different board games. Games like Memory, Uno, and even chess build strategy, memory, and patience. There are tons of board games that can suit your child’s needs at all ages. Also, board games are fantastic for family bonding and they are good replacement to any digital games.

Robots or coding kits designed for kids make programming fun, with basic commands and drag-and-drop coding interfaces.

For Tweens and Teens (10+ Years)

Kids can build their own robots, which helps with programming and engineering skills.

DIY Craft Kits

Arts and crafts like tie-dye, bead jewelry, or model-building kits help with creative expression and patience.
