Eight Important Baby Bath Tips | Parenthood4ever

Sharing is caring!

Continuing our story about practical ways of bathing with newborn to keep her calm and how to bathe a baby step-by-step guide with the video included, in this post we would like to outline eight most important baby bath tips that will help you bathe a baby much easier. Off we go!

1. Check the bath temperature with a baby bath thermometer

Your baby’s bath temperature should be around 37°C at least for the first 2-3 months, as our amniotic fluid has the same temperature. It is not recommended to lower it down before the baby learns how to regulate his body temperature better by himself. If you do not have a baby bath thermometer, there is nothing to worry about! Use your elbow to check on the water. Leave it there for a minute, if it feels nice and warm – get your baby in a baby bath.

2. Do not make sudden moves

The process should be very peaceful when bathing a baby, especially when it is newborn baby first bath. Before he or she reaches six to nine months, taking a bath is rather a nice routine before going to bed. Only later it turns to be a fun routine for parents to dry the floor from liters of water.

3. Stay calm and positive

The best time to bathe newborn is when you are in a good mood, then your baby will feel the same way. It is very important to talk to him and let your baby listening to your voice throughout the whole process. Enjoy every bit with your little one.

4. Dim the lights

One of the most practical baby bath tips I found was to dim the lights. At birth, a newborn’s eyesight is between 20/200 and 20/400. Their eyes are sensitive to bright light, so they are more likely to open their eyes in low light. This is normal until your baby’s vision improves and eye muscles strengthen. This is why low light or several candles are very welcomed when bathing a newborn.

5. Put some relaxing music or lullaby on

One of the greatest baby bath tips I found is to put relaxing music. It will help you and your baby relax, as well as enjoy your time together. Don’t fall asleep though!

6. Make a chamomile bath for babies

This comes from my mother, she always used to add chamomile tea or chamomile seeds to my sisters’ bath. A chamomile bath may help in relieving diaper rash and other skin irritations, encourage peaceful sleep and soften the skin in general. Use this recipe to make a chamomile bath for your baby.

Chamomile is an extremely unique herb. Growing up with my grandparents, I have learned so much about different herbs and teas, also by growing them in our summer garden.

For centuries chamomile has been used for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties. It is such a multi-purpose herb that is often used for anything from colic to soothing irritated skin.

7. When you see your baby feels comfortable in the water,

the great baby bath tip is to slowly drop his ears down the water, moving his hands and legs, moving his body from one side of the bath to another, and dropping some water drops on his body and then face.

8. If your baby slid or his face got down the water, do not panic

Nothing bad has happened at all! Make sure you act like everything is ok, then your baby won’t even feel that something went wrong.

Have you heard about aquatic instinct or baby underwater reflex?

“Newborn babies sport an assortment of automatic reflexes that they lose later in development, as their brains gradually take the reins in matters of survival. One is the “diving reflex,” also known as the bradycardic response; also exhibited by seals and other aquatic animals, the instinct may be a vestige of our ancient marine origins.

It works like this: Infants up to 6 months old whose heads are submerged in water will naturally hold their breath. At the same time, their heart rates slow, helping them to conserve oxygen, and blood circulates primarily between their most vital organs, the heart, and brain. The survival response keeps accidentally submerged babies alive much longer than adults would survive underwater.”

Enjoy precious moments of taking a bath with your little one!
