Chamomile is an extremely unique herb. Growing up with my grandparents, I have learned so much about different herbs and teas, also by growing them in our summer garden.

For centuries chamomile has been used for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties. It is such a multi-purpose herb that is often used for anything from colic to soothing irritated skin.

Let’s take a closer look at the benefits, safety, and beneficial products of this magical chamomile herb.

Why chamomile is so good for children?

Chamomile is an amazing children’s herb because it

  • smells nice
  • tastes great
  • it is not toxic for children
  • it has an extraordinarily soothing effect on your child and her skin.

Benefits of the chamomile tea bath

Chamomile tea bath, indeed, has thousands of magical properties for your baby, and for the adults. Trust us, bathing the baby in chamomile tea is totally worth it. But not necessarily the bath should be taken all the time. You can simply use the brewed tea and apply a compress to the irritated spot.

If your child hates taking baths, the best option is to prepare chamomile tea and clean your baby using a wet cloth. A sponge bath or using a warm damp washcloth is especially good in the early stages when your baby is up to three months old.

Chamomile bath helps your baby relax

Chamomile is a natural relaxant!

It is a fact that drinking chamomile tea helps you relax. The same effect can be achieved by taking a chamomile tea bath. It will help to restore a feeling of calm and tranquillity, and also soothe tired and sore muscles.

Chamomile bath is one of the best bedtime routines

A chamomile tea bath for the baby not only will help to relax your baby but it is also one of the best bedtime routines.

If your baby is quite fussy, or she struggles with colics, one of the best ways to help her is to take a night chamomile bath. The warm bath itself helps the colics to fade, so it is a win-win situation.

Chamomile bath is an excellent skin soother

Chamomile is packed with azulene, which means it is a great anti-inflammatory. Giving a chamomile bath to a baby will help to soothe her skin, and deal with dry or peeling-off skin, any sort of irritations, or diaper rash.

The best thing about it is that chamomile is absolutely natural!

Chamomile Bath Recipe

This recipe comes from my mother, she always used to add chamomile tea and chamomile plants to my sisters’ baths. A chamomile bath for babies may help in relieving diaper rash and other skin irritations, encourage peaceful sleep and soften the skin in general.

Prep: 5 min

Steep: 15 min

Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients:

1 cup (about 250ml) fresh water, 1 heaping teaspoon of chamomile tea leaves (or 1 chamomile tea bag)

Method:

Add 1 cup (about 250 ml) of fresh water just to the boil, and then cool it slightly. Pour the water over 1 chamomile tea bag (or 1 heaping teaspoon of chamomile tea leaves), and let the tea steep, covered, for about 15 minutes.

Remove the tea bag or, if you’ve used loose-leaf chamomile tea, strain the tea. Cool the tea to a suitable temperature for the baby’s bath.

Add cooled tea to the baby’s bath and swish the bath water so it’s blended well. Pop baby in the bath and enjoy this precious bath time together.

Taylors of Harrogate Organic Chamomile Herbal Tea is the right choice if you aim to purchase chamomile tea bags.

This product is absolutely organic. Simply pour freshly boiled water and infuse for 4-5 minutes.

If your little one is suffering from colic, tummy, and digestive issues, 3 to 4 servings a day, 1 to 5 oz per serving depending on the baby’s age will help the baby feel and sleep better.

This babies’ magic tea contains organic and sanitized chamomile, Florence fennel, and Iranian cumin. It is Kosher and Halal certified with no preservatives; dairy-, gluten-, and soy-free. You will find 20 bags inside.

This is a great powder that we used everywhere on our baby. It contains chamomile and aloe which really helps to soothe the skin, especially diaper rash and dry skin.

This bottle is quite big as well, 10 oz (almost 300g) lasted half a year for us. And it is a great price too.

We found that Babyganics Baby Shampoo + Body Wash is an excellent product for us. It contains chamomile, it smells SO nice, and it is absolutely tear-free product.

It is formulated with plant-derived and certified organic ingredients. On top of that, it is foamy and leaves an amazing effect on your hands after washing your baby.

Non-allergenic. Pediatrician and Dermatologist tested. It has an absolutely fantastic value for money too.

Another fantastic set of baby head-to-toe wash shampoo and healing lotion. It contains chamomile, argan oil, and raw shea, which soothes your baby’s skin instantly. (Guilty, but I occasionally use it for myself too!)

All the ingredients are certified organic. These bottles are quite big – 13 fl oz (370 g) each, so we used it all out in a couple of months.

This balm is not entirely chamomile and has a lot of organic ingredients, but this product is worth showcasing.

Era Organics produces amazing balms and creams. There are two products we love when it comes to them.

The super balm is a healing ointment for babies. It is USDA certified organic cream that helps to treat a baby’s eczema, cradle cap (Infant Seborrheic Dermatitis), chapped nose, any sort of rashes, hives, and so much more.

So, this is the second product we love from Era Organics. It is specifically designed for little bottoms and is by far the best natural diaper rash treatment cream I have ever tried.

Personally, I am not a huge supporter of any remedies, medicine, or even homeopathic products unless they are absolutely necessary.

As painful and challenging as teething can be for the entire family, we always used natural solutions and teething accessories.

This teething gel has done a fantastic job for our son. We used to apply it 3-4 times a day and gently rub it into his gums.

What I really love about it is that gel contains the mildest ingredients from mother nature, such as aloe leaf juice, chamomilla flower extract, licorice root extract (all soothing agents), menthol, and peppermint oil (for cooling effect).

Of course, organic baby oil made out of chamomile and calendula is a must-have in every home.

This brand offers a fantastic product for a great value compared to other brands. My baby’s skin was super dry until I started using this product. I also absolutely love the way this makes my baby’s skin feel.

Tip: The best thing about this oil is that you shouldn’t use too much, it absorbs really well. This baby oil has a very light, pleasant scent to it.

What else chamomile is good for?

It can’t be stressed more, chamomile has an incredible amount of magical features and can be used for a variety of problems. All thanks to its nature.

Soothe eye irritation and conjunctivitis

Every time I or my son had eye irritation, instead of running to a pharmacy for an antibiotic, the first thing we did was to prepare a chamomile tea. We usually use chamomile leaves, but a tea bag helps too. Just please make sure you get a natural chamomile tea.

Another important thing is to act fast as soon as you get eye irritation, otherwise, it may be too late and you may need a remedy to treat conjunctivitis.

Method: Prepare the chamomile tea and make sure it has cooled off. It shall be comfortable for your baby’s eye, not hot! Clean your baby’s eyes, especially paying attention to the corners of the eyes and eyelashes. Then gently apply a compress to the eyelids for a minute or two.

Try to repeat this method 4-5 times a day or as much as you feel it is needed to fight the infection.

Relieve baby’s teething pain

Baby’s teething can be so challenging. The worst is that your baby feels a lot of discomfort and pain. Chamomile tea can help to relieve teething pain.

Method: Simply prepare a strong cup of chamomile tea, put it in the fridge and apply it on a sterilized compress. Massage your baby’s gums and the inside of the cheeks three times a day.

We also used the special herbal teething gel containing a variety of herbs including chamomile that we got from the pharmacy.

Relieve baby’s colics

At last, chamomile is an amazing herb to help your baby with colics, gases, bloating, or constipation. One of the most common problems, when the baby is born, is her digestive system. It simply needs more time to accommodate our world.

Baby’s colics is one of the challenges our babies have to deal with, but trust me, it is not forever. In our case, we had terrible colics for almost three months non-stop. Digestion problems in babies are also closely related to breastfeeding or formula-feeding and their general well-being.

Vitamin D at early stages can cause colics too, this is why you always have to watch for the amount of vitamin D that has been extracted. In our case, Vitamin D with less extract was a solution.

Note: All of the methods below are subject to your own responsibility. It is always highly recommended to consult your local GP or doctor first.

On a personal note, I did not tend to give any remedies to my baby apart from breast milk until it was absolutely necessary. I also waited until my baby had a full four weeks old.

For colics and constipation add two tablespoons of chamomile tea to a baby bottle and mix it with water. Give your baby to drink it throughout the day. The mix must be fresh and changed every day. This method applies from four weeks old.

For gas or bloating give your baby one teaspoon of chamomile tea mixed with water after the meal two to three times a day. This method applies from three weeks old.

Is chamomile safe for my child?

Chamomile is extremely safe for your child. The only issue that may raise is pollen. Although most chamomile is harvested before the pollen is released, you still may wish to check if your baby is sensitive to chamomile.

Pro Tip: To make sure the pollen is not a problem, it is always a good idea to purchase special chamomile products. Seek for products containing naturally derived and certified organic ingredients such as chamomile.

Please, see our best recommendations above.

How to check if my child is allergic to chamomile?

There are two ways on checking your baby’s sensitivity to the chamomile herb.

  1. Rub some chamomile on the underside of your baby’s wrist or on the stomach area. Watch for any redness or swelling.
  2. Make a strong chamomile tea and give your child a couple of sips. If your baby is allergic, you will see typical reactions, such as a runny nose, itchiness, rash, or swelling.

Since it is a baby we are talking about, we recommend trying the first option. It is mild and has a fast effect.

After a few hours from the testing period, if all seems well, you and your baby are good to have the chamomile bath!

Enjoy precious moments of taking a bath with your little one!
